1. Overview

Thankfully, Sutasoma Project batch 1 that was started in the beginning of November 2020 is officially completed on November 25, 2020. The process was not that easy to successfully deliver the donation to the targeted 12 disadvantaged families following the available budget. However, the kind spirit and real contribution of the 5 donors pushed this project positively to come to the finish line. Dear donors and all supporters, we did it! Congratulations!!!

There were two different kinds of packages delivered; (1) big package and (2) small package. Two big packages that contained 25 Kg of uncooked rice, 20 pcs of noodles, some eggs, toiletries (included 2 detergents, 2 toothpaste, and 5 soaps), and Rp100,000 cash money / package were delivered to 2 disadvantaged families. Ten small packages that contained 5 Kg of uncooked rice, 4 pcs of noodles, 10 eggs, and Rp50,000 cash money / package were received by 10 disadvantaged families. The division of different priorities was made following the condition of the families and the budget availability. For more details pertaining to packages delivered and beneficiaries' profile, please kindly refer to the point 2 and 3 below.

All beneficiaries felt so thankful and could not stop expressing their gratitude when the food packages were delivered to their places. If you would be there with the organizer, you could feel their feeling, sadness, and happiness. The organizer personally felt so blessed to have the donors' trust to deliver their kindness, so that he could witness such feelings that made him so grateful for the life given and invite more people to help those who are in need together. One thing that should be learned and understood in sharing is that "every little bit helps".

On behalf of the beneficiaries, to all donors; Nela Sirinkova (Czech Republic), Selina Groni (Germany), Laurin Issler (Germany), Manik Septianiari Putri (Bali), and another donor (Bali), and supporters, I thank you very much. I highly appreciate your kindness and tremendous support through the Sutasoma Project batch 1 in November 2020. Hopefully, Sutasoma Project can be one of the ways you sow good deeds and karma. May good thoughts come from all directions. Thank you.

3. Primary Targeted Beneficiaries' Brief Profile

  • Kadek Witana (about 50), a man with a stroke, Br. Bakung, Sukasada, Buleleng – Singaraja, Bali

Kadek Witana is a single dad living with his children in a small house. Every night they sleep in one room altogether. Their bathroom cannot be used. So, this man always took shower in the toilet in the priest house nearby. With that illness he has (stroke), it was a big challenge to walk to the priest house. Additionally, one of his children worked in Denpasar. However, due to the pandemic, currently he has to stay home in the village and does not really make ends meet.

Kadek Witana because he is left disabled by a stroke, must wear diapers - as well his children help lift him to go to the bathroom. As mentioned above, their bathroom is currently not functioning because there is no water coming from the small river nearby like before. Therefore, somebody would help him get water for shower from the priest house.

It can be imagined how much money he needs to spend on diapers. As a rough picture, 1 package of diapers (6 pcs) is for about Rp90,000. When my grandpa needed to wear it, normally he changed it 2/3 times a day. Knowing he is not able to make money (even for food) and his children are mostly still students, it must be a huge challenge for him to live. Luckily, his sister who is a seller in a local market is willing to struggle for him and his children. But still, being a seller in this difficult time and taking care of 7 people in total daily is really a hope for a miracle to bring good luck at the market. Currently, she cannot lift her right hand since once when she was going to the market at 1 a.m. by a bike taxi, they accidentally hit a cat and fell down. She is really struggling every day to afford basic needs.

  • An elderly couple (Sadria / 65 and wife), Sangsit, Buleleng – Singaraja, Bali

Sadria and his wife live together and struggle to have food every day. Before the pandemic, Sadria worked as a daily worker in a cockfighting arena as a parking man and got no more than Rp20,000 (+/- $1.42) per day. Due to the pandemic and social distancing practice, cockfighting activities are prohibited which means he cannot work and gets no money for food because it is the only thing he could do to make money. People prefer to not hire him to do other jobs because of his age and illness (he feels pain in his leg). Currently, he barely walks. In addition, his wife is also sick and just being home waiting for Sadria to bring food and/or hoping neighbor’s kindness to share some.

Sadria is often seen sitting alone on the street side – seemed like daydreaming – thinking of something (perhaps about how to get food for later, for his wife and him). He is not going too far anymore because of his painful leg and his old bicycle is in total broken.

For some particular reasons, this topic of writing needs to be risen up in order to answer the misunderstanding happening especially in the mind of tourists who have travelled and visited temples in Bali. Nevertheless, this brief writing is more than happy having your comments or adds to improve it. Until this time, I have been tutoring and being an Indonesian Language and Culture for overseas students classes’ teaching assistant in the university for five years. During those five years, replacing some Indonesian Culture classes especially Balinese Culture classes in workshops and excursions; I had been asked many times by many curious overseas students regarding to Bali and its colorful, as well as unique culture as Hindu-Balinese. Uniting Indonesia : Sumpah Pemuda (The Youth Pledge) 27th and 28th of October 1928

the Indonesian Youths in the second congress 27th & 28th of October 1928 Courtesy of Google Image I was born on 28 th of October which for Indonesian people, it is a historical day and formally celebrated by holding a flag ceremony in fields, offices’ yard, and also schools’ yard. This day is called as the day of Sumpah Pemuda (Youth’s Pledge). Precisely, it was 27 th and 28 th of October 1928, 17 years before the Indonesia’s independence, the Indonesian Youths from all of the islands were getting together in Batavia (today known as Jakarta) in the youth’s congress and declared their pledges and recognition to Indonesia as a sovereign and independent country. Their pledges consist of three main points which are presented below – followed by the English translation.       1.       Kami Putra dan Putri Indonesia, mengaku bertumpah darah yang satu, Tanah Indonesia.       We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one motherland, Indonesia.

Tumpek Landep, Balinese Hindus’ Day of Metal and the Full Moon of the 10th Month of Balinese Calendar

the crowd of prayers and hopes in Pasupati Temple, Sangsit Village, Buleleng “Balinese women are so culturally strong. They wake up so early in the morning, caring for food for the family and offerings for the Niskala or invisible world, get ready to pray to temples and dozens of shrines in their villages. Meanwhile, this task will take a longer time when there is a big day on that day.   Happiness is simple for them.” 00.30 a.m., we just finished our praying procession we started in the morning the day before. It was a long long day for us. Even my mom woke up at 3 a.m. because she needed to go to the market to buy some cooking ingredients to make food for the family, and the whole day prepare the offerings used on that day. Then I more realized that Balinese women are so culturally strong. They wake up so early in the morning, caring for food for the family and offerings for the Niskala or invisible world, get ready to pray to temples and dozens of shrines in
