A Short Scratch about Possession and Loss (based on a true story)

It's 02.15 a.m. when I am done with my praying at home. A deep deep praying, in the depth of meditation and chanting, till I felt that silence is the most beautiful language I could communicate with to myself, to what I believe in.

In this period of time, I couldn't do nothing, but self-reflection. A time where you are alone in your room, where you can only meet yourself and talk about stories, talk about everything - in your mind - in silence. In such a moment, your mind feels like a big library whose so many books with various categories and topics. Then you start reading them; book by book, chapter by chapter, page by page, word by word, and letter by letter, until you pick yourself up with the knowledge you already get.

All of sudden, in the darkness, I got stuck for a moment in the middle of a book. It's about loss and possession.

It reminded me about a reality of mankind which by the God in Bali Hindu concept gotten Tri Pramana (Three ways in gaining the truth of the truth). This Tri Pramana includes Sabda (the ability to talk; voice), Bayu (the ability to move; power), and Idep (the ability to think; brain). Meanwhile plants got only Bayu, called as Eka Pramana and animals got Sabda and Bayu, called as Dwi Pramana.

Human beings are blessed with brain and the ability to think, which by having this, combined with Sabda and Bayu, practically they can do anything in the world, they can create anything in order to fulfill their limitless needs. And this brain can process many kinds of feelings human beings can feel everyday and storing them as memories that now and then can be recalled easily and impact some sensation in their mind and heart.

Not many days ago, I went to buy my super late breakfast at the canteen behind my campus building. It's a nice canteen with typical Indonesian food, like nasi campur (rice mixed with various meals), bakso (meet balls), soto (chicken soup), etc.

The canteen ladies there are also so nice serving their customers. But there's this one lady clearly staring at me with teary eyes. Then she opened the conversation with me.

"Hey" she started. "Thanks for always buying food here". I smiled and nodded, "Ya, you're welcome. The food are also good, I like them". She replied my smile sweetly, "honestly saying, you remind me of my son that already passed away few years ago".

"Oh, how come?" I was surprised. "Your faces are alike. And he was as tall as you as well". When you came with a black or white t-shirt on you, I thought you were him". Tears filled her eyes, some fell out obviously. She tried to wipe it off.

So, the canteen lady said that in the beginning when I came, her daughter thought I was her brother which was gone. She told the canteen lady, "Mom, it's Bagas (her brother's name)", and she would run away to the kitchen corner and cried silently there.

The canteen lady also couldn't hold her tears when she saw me, even when she told me this. She really loves her son. She feels still lost.

Then we had a good really short conversation. Basically just about how and the age he's gone. He passed away in his 30 because of brain tumor.

The universe will always recall our memory and past. However, the way you value this loss matters! Is it a real losing or just a temporary possession you have? Is it worth crying for or you just need to learn from it then put it away? However, the important thing we all should confirm in our mind and subconscious is that noting's permanent in this world. This is Sekala world we're living in, the visible world we name it, since it's visible for us.

Those worldly stuffs in this world seem more attractive than the heavenly wealth in our heart and mind. Indeed. Cause nowadays, people get attracted to something visible, concrete, touchable, sexy, beautiful, and so on. It causes to forget the truth of why we all are here.

Things happen. People change. Everybody leaves.

In Bali Hindu concept / philosophy, Moksa is one of the aims in this life. Moksa can be translated into the highest perfect happiness, that usually you can have in the after-death world depending on how well you manage your life in the world. The other four divisions that are believed by Balinese Hindu people are Brahman (the God), Atman (soul), Karma Phala, and Punarbhawa (reincarnation). Those five divisions including Moksa are wrapped in the name of Panca Sradha which means the five beliefs in life. In addition, all divisions of Panca Sradha can influence one another and give an impact to somebody's life, in order to achieve what is called as the highest perfect happiness or Moksa.

Finally, keep this in mind. In such era, keep the worldly stuffs and heavenly wealth balanced to enrich your heavenly mind - spiritually. Be open. Also utilize the worldly stuffs positively. We know everything that is too much is not good. Always try to be balanced and live in the present.

Now, technically you can name your problem and find the solution. It's late already for my old soul. Plus actually I'm not a night person. I should rest. Tomorrow is another great new day.

Everything is provided in this world. If it is meant to be yours, at the end it is yours; if it is not, let it go peacefully.

Tumpek Landep, Balinese Hindus’ Day of Metal and the Full Moon of the 10th Month of Balinese Calendar

the crowd of prayers and hopes in Pasupati Temple, Sangsit Village, Buleleng “Balinese women are so culturally strong. They wake up so early in the morning, caring for food for the family and offerings for the Niskala or invisible world, get ready to pray to temples and dozens of shrines in their villages. Meanwhile, this task will take a longer time when there is a big day on that day.   Happiness is simple for them.” 00.30 a.m., we just finished our praying procession we started in the morning the day before. It was a long long day for us. Even my mom woke up at 3 a.m. because she needed to go to the market to buy some cooking ingredients to make food for the family, and the whole day prepare the offerings used on that day. Then I more realized that Balinese women are so culturally strong. They wake up so early in the morning, caring for food for the family and offerings for the Niskala or invisible world, get ready to pray to temples and dozens of shrines in
